| - Steelers' Leftwich not guaranteed start upon return
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Byron Leftwich was brought in to fill the slot emptied by Ben Roethlisberger when he was suspended by the league for some unpleasant off-field conduct. Then Leftwich got hurt and the inexperienced Dennis Dixon will get the team started this weekend. But even when Leftwich returns from his knee sprain, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review reports that he isn't guaranteed to take the spot from Dixon. "(Injuries) are unfortunate, but they also provide opportunities for others," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "What others do with the opportunities oftentimes determine what happens going forward." In other words, if Dixon cashes in some of that potential he's got into actual positive play, he may get to start for all four games that Roethlisberger is out of action. Follow Yahoo! | - Haynesworth returning to Titans?
Things haven't exactly gone well between the Washington Redskins and defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth this offseason and the Tennessean reports that the folks in D.C. are talking to execs at the Tennessee Titans about a possible trade that would send Haynesworth back to the team where he spent his first seven seasons.Of course, as the paper notes, the Redskins would like a decent draft pick in the deal and the Titans don't want to give up a whole lot for the former All-Pro. "The Titans and Redskins initially discussed a Haynesworth trade in April during the NFL Draft, with the Titans offering a fourth-round pick," the paper reports. This next round of conversations started this past weekend, according to the paper. However, now the Redskins want "at least a second-round pick, and the Titans aren't willing to go that high," the Tennessean reports. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Patriots QB Brady nearing contract extension?
That $58 million contract extension for Tom Brady that the Boston Herald reported yesterday is "gaining momentum", according to ESPN.The Herald reported that the extension offer from the New England Patriots to its franchise quarterback who has won three Super Bowls is for three years. That would start after this season, which pays Brady $6.5 million. The Herald said yesterday that the deal could be done within 24 hours. ESPN reports that the extension could be worth between $18 million
and $20 million annually and that Brady would like to get the deal done
this week before the Patriots season kicks off on Monday. One source told the Herald that Brady would not accept any deal that had him making less annually than the Indianapolis Colts' Peyton Manning, who makes $16.4 million per year. Manning is also in the final year of his contract and his next one should be a doozy, too, since, as the Sporting News points out, Colts owner Jim Irsay has said that "his goal is to make Manning the highest paid player with the new contract." | - Jets bringing back FB Richardson
Cornerback Darrelle Revis isn't the only one the New York Jets have back in the fold. Also returning to the locker room is fullback Tony Richardson.
Richardson's return is a bit different, though. He was sent packing by the team last Saturday. But coach Rex Ryan tells the New York Daily News that the 38-year-old Richardson, who only had seven carries for 48 yards last season, will be back with the team before it kicks off its season next Monday night. The cut was because of salary considerations. Richardson's base salary for the year was $855,000, and the organization did not want to guarantee it by keeping him on the initial 53-man roster, the Daily News says. The team received a roster exemption from the NFL after it signed Revis and used it on Richardson. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Patriots WR Moss feels unwanted
Wide receiver Randy Moss has spent three of his 12 seasons with the New England Patriots and is readying for his fourth, but he's getting frustrated that the team hasn't offered him a contract extension, according to CBSSports.com. He's in the final year of a three-year deal and will make $6.4 million this season. "When you have done so much and put so much work in, it kind of feels like I am not wanted," Moss told CBS Sports. "I am taking that in stride and playing my final year out and whatever the future holds is what it holds, but it is kind of a bad feeling -- feeling not wanted. It is not like my production has gone down. I am speaking from an individual standpoint. I don't know about Tom [Brady's] or whoever else's contract." The 33-year-old caught 832 passes last year for 13 touchdowns and 1,246 yards. "I am a little older and understand the nature of the business -- the older you get the more your skills supposedly diminish, but I think I am getting wiser in how to use my physical skills," he added. "That's the frustrating part when you put so much heart and desire into things and feel like you are not wanted." Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Housh feeling unwanted in Seattle
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh has heard the rumors that the team has put him up on the trading block and he's feeling a little burned that nobody from the team has said anything to him about it, according to the Tacoma News Tribune."I can't control it," he told the paper. "I'm the type of dude where it doesn't bother me because I can't control it, but it does bother me because nobody said anything to me, and nobody has said anything to me." One of the reasons he's likely so annoyed is because his wife and kid were set to come to Seattle but this has changed those plans. The paper notes that the Seahawks are not likely to cut the 32-year-old who led the team in receptions last year with 79 because he is guaranteed to cost them $7 million whether he's on the roster or not. | - Cowboys WR Crayton asking for release
Dallas Cowboys Patrick Crayton is asking the team for the second time this year to send him packing. When Dez Bryant was picked in the draft earlier this year, Crayton asked to be released but the team wouldn't do it.Now Crayton is asking to be released again, according to the Dallas Morning News, before the 5 p.m. Saturday deadline for teams to cut down rosters to 53 players. "It seems he doesn't figure in their plans so it's not logical to be on the roster until Saturday," his agent told the paper. "We don't see the use in prolonging it." In his six seasons with the ‘Boys, Crayton has appeared in 82 games, scored 23 touchdowns and had 196 catches for 2,888 yards. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Rams out of Vincent Jackson bidding
The St. Louis Rams had been trying to trade for San Diego Chargers holdout restricted free agent wide receiver Vincent Jackson but NFL.com is reporting that the Rams have pulled out of the bidding."There are too many moving parts," a Rams source told the site. "That's not something we're pursuing right now." The source says that the Rams are looking for a second-round pick as well as another pick. And that's all before trying to work out a contract with Jackson. Meanwhile, the Seattle Seahawks are the only team to have spoken with Jackson's agents. But that was a few weeks ago and NFL.com reports that the two sides "have not moved closer than that to a trade." Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Raiders RB Bush out six games?
Last year, Oakland Raiders running back Michael Bush scored three touchdowns and rushed for 589 yards. It looks like the team may have to find those numbers from somebody else. Bush has fractured his thumb and could be out for six weeks, according to the Oakland Tribune. The paper notes that Bush has had surgery on he thumb. A doctor not involved with the surgery said that it likely involved having "screws inserted into the bone to speed the healing process," the paper reports. The Raiders aren't commenting on the injury or providing a timetable for Bush's return. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Holdout Revis done with Jets forever?
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis is taking his holdout to a whole new level, according to Yahoo! Sports' Jason Cole. His agents are suggesting that Revis is ready to never play for the team again if the Jets don't come up with the kind of cash soon that he wants. He becomes a free agent next year but wants the team to give him a new deal now that pays him more than league-salary-leading cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders who makes $15.17 million average a year. Cole notes that Revis is saying that he's ready to never play for the Jets "ever again" and he may just sit out the season like his uncle Sean Gilbert once did with the Washington Redskins when he wanted between $4 million and $5 million and the team was "only" offering $3.2 million. Gilbert moved on to the Carolina Panthers the following season for $7 million. It's looking like Revis may be ready to do the same kind of thing. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Arizona Cardinals consider cutting QB Leinart?
The Arizona Cardinals are shopping quarterback Matt Leinart, who probably has more grumbles this preseason than actual snaps of the football. The Arizona Republic is reporting that the team is considering two other options: keep Leinart as a backup to Derek Anderson or cut him by Saturday when rosters need to go from 75 to 53. "Rumors run rampant, and I have nothing to add to that," coach Ken Whisenhunt told the paper. "There is a lot of speculation by a number of different people. As far as where we are, nothing has changed." Whisenhunt said he plans to play Leinart in the team's final preseason game against the Washington Redskins Thursday evening. The Republic also notes that right guard Reggie Wells is on the trading block. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| | - Vikings QB Favre's eyes hurting
Brett Favre has had a lot of visits to doctors in his 20 years in the league, but not too many of them have probably been to the eye doctor. The 40-year-old Minnesota Vikings quarterback complained of a weird dryness in his eyes yesterday, AOL Fanhouse reports, and got a ticket to the eye doctor's as a result. "I mean, all morning they have been as dry and brittle as a couple of potato chips," Favre told the site. "I've been dealing with this lately. I've tried a few things, but nothing has worked. So, we're going to get them checked out. Now, I can still see good." Along with the injury to wide receiver of Sidney Rice and migraines of Percy Harvin, this eye problem could be another good excuse for Favre to turn to if the Vikes can't match the stellar season it had last year. | - Cardinals QB Leinart on the block
Arizona Cardinals quarterback Matt Leinart has gotten himself put up on the trading block, according to FOXSports. The man who was supposed to be the starting quarterback for the Cards hasn't gotten a lot of love from teammates and didn't do himself a lot of favors the other day when he publicly bellyached about getting demoted on the team's depth chart behind Derek Anderson. The team has engaged in conversations with more than one team about a deal for the 27-year-old, according to FOXSports. Leinart is set to make $2.5 million this season and more than $7 million next year. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
| - Jason Taylor looked upon to fill in for injured LB Pace
New York Jets starting outside linebacker Calvin Pace is out several weeks with a fractured foot. The New York Daily News reports that veteran Jason Taylor, who was brought in to do situational work this season, will be looked upon to plug the hole while Pace heals.
Taylor, 36, has been in the league for 14 years and will likely be a Hall of Famer someday. "He looks great," Jets head coach Rex Ryan told the Daily News. "We can say what we want, but some of the pickups we had, we struck gold on a few of them." Pace was scheduled for surgery Tuesday night. Follow Yahoo! Sports Rumors on Twitter at @markjmill.
